Livelihoods: A survey to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Mumbaikars’ livelihoods, has shown that at least 66 percent of people either lost their jobs, or had their employment avenues adversely affected due to the pandemic. The survey was conducted by Praja Foundation, with 2,087 people across the city.
Forty-seven percent of respondents said they had to dip into their savings to pay for household expenses; 66 percent said they found it difficult to pay rent; 36 percent said they were forced to go on leave without salary; and 25 percent said they worked without salary during the lockdown. While the lockdown impacted all professions, it was worse for some more than others. While 66 percent of office-goers said they were paid less but forced to work extra hours, 51 percent of clerical and supervisory staff and 46 percent of unskilled workers said they worked without pay.
The survey also looked at the impact of the pandemic and the lockdown on sectors including health, education, economic, and transport services.
