Rights: A report commissioned by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment recommends that caste surnames and other details that reveal candidates religious or social backgrounds should not be revealed during interviews for civil services and other central or state-level examinations. According to the report, the chances of discrimination are particularly high at the interview stage of the recruitment process.
This report was prepared by the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI)—an association that promotes business enterprises for Dalits. DICCI recommends that the policy of prohibiting candidates from writing their names and other personal details on their answer copies should be extended to all recruitment-related exercises. This will help to check deliberate discrimination and prevent socio-religious bias in the evaluation of candidates.
The report also pitches for reservation in the private sector to ensure job security at par with advanced sections of the society. In addition, it asks the government to consider sponsoring national and regional Dalit media channels that can educate society on the problem faced by those belonging to the scheduled castes.
