Rights: The Tamil Nadu Government Railway Police (GRP) has rescued 11,244 children from railway stations and trains between 2016 and 2021. Of these, 2,600 were handed over to their parents and 8,644 to childcare homes.
The GRP, which operates in Chennai and Tiruchi, comprises of 47 GRP stations, each of which has a woman sub-inspector and two women constables to manage children who have either run away from their homes, are in conflict with law, or have been trafficked.
Apart from increasing vigilance at railway stations, the GRP also visits schools to spread awareness among students on the dangers of running away from home, and the crimes they can be subjected to.
